Annie E. Casey Foundation

Client
The Annie E. Casey Foundation is one of the leading child and family welfare philanthropies in the United States.

Challenge
The Casey Foundation's Plain Talk Initiative took on the nation's failure to effectively combat rising rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. This ground-breaking effort needed compelling, user-friendly training and education materials to help "askable" adults, parents, and leaders in communities across America to communicate effectively with teens about reproductive health and other challenges in their lives.

Enter Reingold
Reingold designed an evergreen guide—both in print and online—to implement Plain Talk in urban areas nationwide, highlighting program successes and including survey questionnaires, a tool for mapping community resources, and comprehensive links to topical websites. As the program spread and grew more successful, Casey returned to us for a second publication, a training manual for local residents and trainers alike, and a third, a Spanish-language version. We produced tailored creative concepts for both books, making them easy to read and use through tabbing, charts, and icons to steer different users easily through the material and handouts.

Results
Plain Talk took hold at six sites in ethnically diverse communities across the country, and in 2003 Plain Talk won an award for outstanding design from the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington.
