Fairfax County Public Schools
Client
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is one of the
nation's most diverse school systems, with a student population
composed of more than 40 different language groups and ethnicities.
Challenge
In 2002, the FCPS Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee
finished a rough draft manual to help minority parents—who speak
several different languages—engage with the school system to help their
children succeed. The volunteer committee needed someone to
professionally edit and design the handbook for publication.
Enter Reingold
Reingold rewrote the Advocacy Handbook for Parents: How to Help Your Child Succeed from K through Grade 12,
establishing a consistent voice and user-friendly content organization.
Then we created an appealing design, including inserts for
English-speaking families and the same material in Farsi, Korean,
Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. The handbook contained note pages and
information pockets to help parents use it as an evergreen tool for
collecting school information as their children progress.
Results
The Fairfax County School Board praised the handbook's usability and
sharp looks, tripled the print order, and urged the Minority Student
Achievement Program to give the book the widest possible distribution.
And as a testament to client satisfaction, when the time came to update
and reproduce the handbook four years later, FCPS called on Reingold
again.
