Fairfax County Public Schools

Client
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is one of the nation's most diverse school systems, with students from more than 40 different language groups and ethnicities.

Challenge
When members of an FCPS committee drafted a manual to help minority parents engage with the school system to help their children succeed, they realized they needed professional help to transform it into an appealing, user-friendly handbook that parents would embrace.

Enter Reingold
Reingold rewrote and designed the Advocacy Handbook for Parents: How to Help Your Child Succeed from K through Grade 12 to engage a diverse audience. The cover features the faces of minority children from around the world, and handbook inserts are printed in English, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. The handbook is tabbed and pocketed for easily locating specific information, and note pages at key points enable parents to use it as an evergreen tool for recording school information as their children's progress.

Results
The FCPS school board praised the manual's usability and sharp looks, and tripled the print order to give the book the widest possible distribution. They enlisted Reingold to create a companion brochure and poster as well, and four years later called on us again to produce updated reports and materials.
