The Issue: Fairfax County, VA, 12th largest school district in the nation, is home to scores of ethnic groups. Many families speak little English. One school alone educates kids from more than 100 countries with 40 languages. Now parents have help—to communicate with teachers, support their children’s education, and guide choices for their future.

Client Approach: Fairfax County Schools’ parents’ committee mirrors the mosaic of Fairfax international ethnic and religious communities. The committee monitors what parents need to know to understand the public school system. Their aim is to turn reticent, uninformed, or overburdened parents into successful advocates for their kids.

Enter Reingold: We transformed a report-by-committee into a sharp tool to guide parents in advocating for their children from kindergarten through high school. Reingold designed a workbook-handy manual with note pages and a place for reports and updates. Working with school staff and parents, we prepared information on standardized tests, special curricula, regional colleges, and other options—wrapped in a package that's easy to keep and use.

Solution: The Parent Handbook, now in six languages, won a great reception from parents, the Superintendent, and School Board, who quintupled the print run. Now, parents and community volunteers take pride in offering tangible, practical help, supplemental programs, and more, to minority and new American students and their families.
