The Challenge: Along the banks of the Potomac River, in the heart of Washingtons Georgetown neighborhood, lies a derelict 10-acre parcel of land. For two decades, neighbors and residents nurtured a vision of replacing cracked asphalt and heavy-equipment parking with magnificent waterfront green space. These committed residents founded a commission to support a waterfront park that would curve from The Kennedy Center to Key Bridgea park to set the final jewel in a necklace of green along the Washington shoreline from the C & O Canal to Mount Vernon.

Approach: Georgetown Waterfront Park Commission members, in partnership with the National Park Service, the National Park Foundation, and city leaders, launched a capital campaign for the park. A stunning design was commissioned from world-renowned landscape architects Wallace Roberts & Todd and public artist Jody Pinto. The partners next step was to persuade individuals, corporations, foundations, and Congress to invest in the park.
Enter Reingold: The National Park Foundation engaged our team to develop a campaign plan; identify prospective contributors; mobilize, coach, and support the park committee; write compelling case statements; handle publicity; and help match requests to investors' interests.
Solution: In September, the park design cleared its last hurdleunanimous approval by the National Capital Planning Commission. The campaign, launched in early October, has raised $4 million thus far. There's much more to do. And in the end, we will have helped create a landmark urban national park for strollers, boaters, cyclists, and visitors to enjoy, savoring the beauty of the great Potomac here in the heart of Washington.
