The Situation: Washington faced a healthcare crisis. More than half the District’s 5,000+ providers were ill-prepared to meet federally mandated HIPAA compliance standards, so complex even sophisticated entities needed a year to prepare. Healthcare providers faced a potential ban from practice in the District, leaving a void in care that would cripple an already troubled healthcare system.
Client Approach: The Mayor’s Office sought quick action to rescue providers. They needed to equip the healthcare community to meet HIPAA’s rigorous demands—and avoid severe legal penalties. The Mayor’s team turned to Reingold to help reach out to every provider serving the District.
Enter Reingold: Together, we raced to convene the HIPAA DC Healthcare Provider Summit, with experts delivering tools and messages to set providers in motion. Reingold designed the Summit program and created a compliance tool for every DC provider—a credit-card-sized CD-ROM containing information links to additional tools and compliance solutions. As post-Summit support, the electronic card is a customized, comprehensive, stand-alone guide to regulatory compliance.
Solution: With two lines of defense in place, the District became a champion for providers struggling to make sense of complex Federal regulations—and a role model for other local governments. Compliance deadlines were met and, in Washington, quality healthcare continued without interruption.
